Biography

Christopher Healey is an Australian composer whose music has been commissioned, performed, and broadcast by leading ensembles and arts organisations across Australia and internationally. His works have been presented by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (Cybec), Omega Ensemble, Camerata – Queensland's Chamber Orchestra, Flinders Quartet, BRON Saxophone Quartet, Divisi Chamber Singers, 4MBS Classic FM, BoB – Best of Brass, Ensemble Français, Ensemble Fabrique, Duo Piaggio, the Nickson Quartet, and performers across Australia, China, Europe, and the United States.

Christopher has been selected nationally for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's Cybec 21st Century Australian Composers Program, Omega Ensemble's CoLAB Career Accelerator, and Flinders Quartet's Ascend Program. He has also served as Emerging Composer-in-Residence with Camerata – Queensland's Chamber Orchestra. His catalogue comprises more than 100 works spanning solo music, chamber music, orchestral works, choral compositions, concertos, and opera. His piano work Sea Song is published in the AMEB Piano Series 19 syllabus and is performed by students throughout Australia.

Christopher's music explores the intersection of metamodern philosophy, wabi-sabi aesthetics, and contemporary musical language. Characterised by lyrical immediacy, richly textured sound worlds, and emotional breadth, his works move fluidly from intimate introspection to dramatic intensity. From one-minute miniatures to large-scale orchestral and operatic works, Christopher seeks to create music that reflects the emotional complexity of modern audiences—music that embraces contemporary challenges while remaining deeply human.

Christopher holds a PhD in Composition from the University of Queensland, with his doctoral research Exploring Metaxis: An Exploration of Metamodern and Wabi Sabi Aesthetics and Philosophies in a Folio of Original Compositions. He also holds a Bachelor of Music (Composition) with First Class Honours from the University of Queensland. He studied composition with Gerard Brophy, Robert Davidson, and Daron Hagen, and has received mentorship from Carl Vine, Nico Muhly, Missy Mazzoli, Christopher Gordon, Christopher Cerrone, and Holly Harrison.

His music has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Alan Lane Award, the A.G. Francis Prize, second prizes in the Arcadia Winds Composition Competition and the ANZVS Composition Competition, and the Australian Postgraduate Award. His compositions have been commissioned by leading performers and organisations, reflecting an ongoing commitment to diverse musical forms across orchestral, chamber, vocal, and instrumental repertoire.

Alongside his composing, Christopher is the founding Artistic Director of Ensemble CANE, an ensemble dedicated to championing adventurous contemporary music and new Australian works. He has also contributed to Australia's musical community as a writer and commentator, with articles and programme notes published by organisations including the Australian Youth Orchestra, Australian Music Centre, ABC Classic, and CutCommon.

Through his creative practice, research, and advocacy for new music, Christopher seeks to expand the possibilities of contemporary composition—creating works that unite emotional sincerity, intellectual curiosity, and imaginative exploration.
